My engineering journey didn’t start in a laboratory – it started in the field.
Before pursuing engineering, I worked in the oil and gas sector, eventually rising to the role of Drilling Supervisor. In my final winter in the field, I oversaw a 32-person seismic exploration crew in -30°C conditions, successfully delivering a multi-million dollar drilling project ahead of schedule with zero misfires and no lost-time injuries.
While I loved the leadership challenges and the harsh realities of field operations, I realized my true strengths lay in problem-solving and technical execution. I wanted to design the systems we were using.
This drive led me to the Instrumentation Engineering Technology program at Red Deer College, where I graduated top of my class with distinction. I discovered a deep passion for hardware, programming, and process control, which pushed me to take my education even further. I enrolled at the University of Alberta to complete my degree in Computer Engineering, culminating in receiving my Iron Ring and graduating with distinction.
Today, as an EIT and Instrumentation Technologist, I bridge the gap between high-level software architecture and physical, real-world hardware. My background in the field taught me that when a system fails, it isn’t just a bug on a screen – it has real physical consequences. I bring that same rigorous, safety-first mindset to how I write deterministic firmware and design embedded systems today.
